Kate Loves Willy

I know lots of people are probably sick of hearing about the wedding but I can’t help but share my experience of the day.

I woke up the morning after with a slightly fuzzy hangover and an urgent need for coffee. Turned on the news to catch the highlights of the day to hear that almost 19 million people in the UK watch the event on TV and that 2 Billion caught the live footage across the globe!

I am fortunate enough to live in this great city only a couple of miles away from where all the action took place so naturally I had to be nosy. I got to Trafalgar Square just in time before the security closed it off. Friends of mine managed to get to The Mall so between us we had 2 hotspots covered.

The day was a celebration…obviously for the newly married couple but also (and for me, more importantly) it was a celebration of all things British. Spirits were high and the atmosphere was great. The sea of Union Jacks waving was a sight that made the hairs on my neck stand on end.

I was proudly wearing my Union Jack which became an invitation for people to come up to me wanting a photo taken with me…These were random people with one thing in common. None of them were British but they were still loving the festivities and celebrations of the day.

I’ll keep this one brief…So to His Royal Highness and his new bride, Congratulation and thanks for the day off.

Also, Pippa Middleton, if your reading...call me ;)

My Saint George's Day

The April sun beats down as I emerge from Leicester Square tube station. Everybody seems to be enjoying the Spring ‘heat wave’ that were having. It’s funny how everyone looks more attractive when the sun is shining…that goes for London as well. All of a sudden the grittiness of the city is disguised by an aura of beauty.

I make my way to the festivities in Trafalgar Square. The permanent residents of the square are present…one legged pigeons…millions of lost tourists…the London 2012 countdown clock…the lions statues that looked oh so big when I was a kid and of course Nelson. In addition there were hoards of patriotic English and a real atmosphere of pride.

Here I was standing in one of the most famous landmarks in the world in the midst of what makes up England…every extreme from the Pearly Queens to Millwall fans…mum and dads trying the recite the story of George and the dragon…groups of friends drinking England’s finest Jamaican lager…rosy red dolly birds who forgot the sun block…balding blokes showing off their tattoos to express their pride…amazing buskers from the underground sharing their talent…touts trying their luck selling William & Kate memorabilia…rich…poor…young…old…English.

I urge anyone who says that St. George’s Day isn’t celebrated enough to get down to central London on 23rd April 2012…with the Olympics around the corner, it’s sure to be a cracking day!

My Saint George’s Day. My London. My England.
