So, the other week London experienced its first load of snowfall of the current winter. Snow in the city has a number of effects on the day to day life in the capital.
I realise there are people in the States, Russia, Scandinavia & Canada, etc. who read this blog and I’m sure you will find it amusing that when I say snow, I mean about 6 inches.
These 6 inches have a massive effect on us...the buses come to a standstill (bearing in mind that the buses didn’t even stop during the blitz), the tubes simply can’t handle it, everyone believes that they deserve a day off (a snow day) and most people do! The biggest change that happens in the city is that Londoners are actually happy for a few hours...this is a slight generalisation but it’s well know that people in London aren’t renowned for their friendly, open natured and vivacious attitude...just take any tube journey at 8am and you’ll see what I mean.
I was walking home from work as the city became a winter wonderland with a white blanket of snow covering the streets. I came across some particularly excited folk who were having a full on snow fight and hurling snowballs at passing cars. This encouraged more and more people to get involved and what would normally end up in a brawl, turned out to be a genuine bit of fun. The guys even managed to get the police involved by lobbing a snowball at them as they were walking their beat...they lobbed one back!
I reckon to resolve conflict in the city, discourage this ‘gang culture’ that we are falling into and reducing crime we should just send those involved to cold countries and let them have a roll about in the snow.
On another note...if it’s acceptable to throw a snowball at a random stranger when it snows, is it therefore acceptable to pour a bucket of water over someone when it rains???
